Zone-1 "X" This play is similar to Carolina above but without the long skip pass, and younger teams would find this easier to run. Sometimes the middle low defender will cheat up to the high post to guard O4 and the 2-3 zone now looks more like a 2-1-2. This play takes advantage of that. O1 dribbles to the right to engage the outside top defender.
If a cutter goes from one side of the court to the other, and the defender stays with that cutter, you’ve got yourself a man to man defense. If the defenders move to a certain border before handing off the cutter to another player as he enters a new area of the court, you’ve got a zone.
