Despite a limited impact in his debut season in 2012-13, Thakur returned stronger and fitter the following season, impressing with 27 wickets at an average of 26.25. His breakthrough came in the 2014-15 season when he finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy, claiming 48 wickets at an average of 20.81.Thakur's performances earned him recognition, and he was selected for the India A squad in matches against Australia A and South Africa A.
